Hiraeth Energy and Magnora Offshore Wind, the partners developing the Mor Cymru projects, were delighted to hear the continued commitment of Welsh Government to renewable energy yesterday.
The Minister for Climate Change, Julie James, stated her commitment of behalf of Welsh Government in a written statement that highlighted the responses to Wales’ proposed renewable energy targets.
The commitment to generating 100% of Wales’ needs from renewable electricity by 2035 has been affirmed, along with an ongoing commitment to keep track with consumption.
We think that this target could be more ambitious – particularly if more projects were maintained with significant amounts of community and local ownership, as proposed for the Mor Cymru projects. But it’s a positive step for the short term, and we look forward to further engagement in the longer term to capture even more value for Wales from renewable energy.
The second important part of the statement related to community ownership of energy, with the Minister stating her intention that the target should be lifted from 1GW of renewable energy in community ownership by 2030, to 1.5GW by 2035.
Our projects could make a significant contribution to this target – we look forward to helping Welsh Government deliver on their important aspirations!
